TEMPE – Two All-American transfers and the Arizona high school record holder in the boy's javelin throw will join the Sun Devil men's track and field team this spring as Steven Champlin, Turner Washington and Carlan Naisant round out ASU roster, while all-ACC high jumper Erika Voyzey joins the women's team, director of track and field Greg Kraft announced Monday.
The sprints group led by coaches Dion Miller and Javonie Small put a bow on their new-look men's roster with the addition of Champlin, a graduate transfer from Texas Tech.
A quarter-miler out of Castroville, Texas, Champlin comes to ASU with three first-team All-America honors as a member of Red Raider 4x400-meter relay quartets.
He didn't compete last outdoor season, but Champlin scored eight points for Texas Tech at the Big 12 Indoor Championships when he finished fourth in the 400 and sixth in the 200. The two all-conference honors were his fifth and sixth individual All-Conference honors in one of the fastest conferences in the country.
Champlin set a personal best of 45.01 during the 2017 outdoor season that earned him a place in the open 400 at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds for the first time in his career.
Coach Brian Blutreich will get another boost to his throws program with Washington, an All-Pac-12 discus thrower who makes the trip north after spending a season in Tucson.
Washington is a Tucson product out of Canyon Del Oro, a former Gatorade Player of the Year and a New Balance Outdoor Champion in the discus.
He finished fourth at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships with a throw of 54.38m/178-5 feet, which was one of his shorter throws of the year as he topped 56.50m/183-11 feet the week prior and placed the disc beyond 55 meters four more other times during the season.
Washington was one of three freshmen last year to advance to the NCAA Championships in the discus throw. He would go on to take 19th.
The Sun Devils add another Arizona state record-holder into the ranks with Tempe's own Naisant.
He dominated the javelin competition for Marcos de Nize high school, winning the first ever Arizona state title with a throw of 61.49m/201-9, more than 40 feet farther than second place. Naisant dominated at the national level, too, winning three U.S. Junior Olympic titles.
Although he made a name by going unbeaten in the javelin during his senior season, Naisant finished third in the shot put at the state championships and even competed in the triple jump and discus throw.
Voyzey adds depth to the women's jumps crew that already features the likes of six-time all-conference honoree Jessica Barreira and true freshman Sydnee Larkin.
While at Miami (Fla.), Voyzey set a personal best of 1.74m/5-10 feet and earned three all-ACC honors, taking fourth, third and fifth, in three of her four conference championship appearances. She also brings regional experience to Tempe, having advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds at the end of her freshman season.
The new Sun Devils will all participate this coming season, but the three men will make their debuts in the outdoor season with the discus and javelin both exclusively outdoor events, and with Champlin having just outdoor eligibility on the track.
