TEMPE, Ariz, - The Arizona State volleyball team (2-0) opened their 2018 campaign with wins over the UT Arlington Mavericks (0-1) and the New Mexico State Aggies (1-1) at Wells Fargo Arena Friday in the opening day of the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic.
"This morning we broke the ice," said redshirt freshman Danica Krstonošic. "We came ready in the afternoon and the crowd was awesome and they got us moving too."
The Sun Devils opened their day in a matchup against UT Arlington, defeating the Mavericks in four sets, 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-13. Sophomore transfer Claire Kovensky led the way for the Sun Devils in her first outing in the maroon and gold, recording a double-double with 15 kills and a career high 17 assists. Junior Ivana Jeremic and sophomore Nicole Peterson also reached the double-double benchmark, Jeremic with 12 kills and a career high 18 digs and Peterson with 34 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Megan Beedie contributed a career-high 10 kills.
The Mavericks were led by junior Petra Mandseron and redshirt senior Zhanelle Geathers, each recording 8 kills.
In the second matchup against New Mexico State, Arizona State swept the Aggies in three sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-18). Jeremic and Peterson each earned their second double-double of the day, Jeremic with 14 kills and 10 digs and Peterson with 27 assists and 10 digs. Kovensky added another solid effort, contributing 7 kills and 11 digs in the three-set match.
"Our serving was better than it's been since I've been at ASU," head coach Sanja Tomasevic said. "I'll say that our serving was probably the best thing tonight. Just the way we served against them, they couldn't do what they wanted to do."
For the Aggies, redshirt freshman Savannah Davison led the effort with 8 kills.
Up next, the Sun Devils wrap the tournament with a matchup against Pacific (0-1) Saturday at 7 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena. The match will be livestreamed via TheSunDevils.com. Prior to the Arizona State's final contest, the Classic will continue with neutral matches between UT Arlington and New Mexico State at 10 a.m. and Pacific and UT Arlington at 2:30 p.m.
