In his freshman season he had two top-10 finishes as he won Tucson's National Invitational with a 17-under 199 and tied for second at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational with a 12-under 201. His 71.61 stroke average remains the second-best by a freshman in Sun Devil history, behind only Jon Rahm's 71.37 in 2012-13. He put the finishing touches on a solid freshman season that started in January of 2017 with an even-par 288 at the NCAA Championships in Chicago. On a day where 84 rounds produced an average score of 77.25, he fired a 1-over 73 with two birdies. His even-par score tied for the fourth-best by a freshman at the 2017 finals. He then reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 U.S. Amateur after advancing to match play in a 13-player-for-eight-spots playoff.
