Tempe, Ariz. - The Sun Devil baseball team fell in the final game of the nonconference mid-week series against Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Brady Corrigan took the mound for Wednesday night's matchup keeping CSF in check for a career-best six innings, with a heavy dose of flyouts and groundouts to keep the ASU defense busy. Corrigan ended his night with the first quality start of his young career, only allowing one earned run behind three strikeouts.
Junior Gage Canning kept up with his dominance at the plate, showing the Sun Devil fans that he can do more than just hit triples. Canning's third-inning home run marked his third of the year and extended his streak of reaching base this season to all 29 games to date.
Arizona State threatened to place their first run on the board in the bottom half of the second when Alika Williams and Hunter Bishop reached the bases via singles. A catcher's interference placed Gage Workman at first, loading the bases with one out in the inning and bringing freshman shortstop Drew Swift to the plate. Swift hit a 3-2 offering on the ground giving just enough time for the second baseman to corral it to turn the 4-6-3 double play.
Canning drew the first run of the game for the Devils when he smashed the ball to deep right-center field, ricocheting off the College World Series honor board. Canning' s long ball would be all the Titans would surrender in the inning, leaving things tied at 1-1.
Runs wouldn't be easy to come by for the rest of the game, keeping the score deadlocked at one apiece through seven innings of play. The Sun Devil bullpen proved valuable, as senior Jake Godfrey took over the bump in the seventh and gave his team one inning of scoreless work.
The tie broke in the top half of the eighth when Fullerton's Sahid Valenzuela capitalized on a single to catcher Lyle Lin. The one run would be enough to earn the victory.
Up next: The Sun Devils welcome USC to town for the start of a three-game set scheduled to get underway Friday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. Follow the game live via online on Pac-12 Plus.
