LOS ANGELES – The Sun Devil women's tennis team dropped a lengthy affair with No. 15 UCLA Friday afternoon in Los Angeles to move to 13-6 on the season.
"It's never fun to lose, but I thought this was a hard-fought match and I'm proud of the way we competed," coach Sheila McInerney said.
John-Baptiste/Hattingh fell for just the first time as a pairing to the No. 11 tandem in the nation, and Fossa Huergo/Klanecek dropped the match on court three to put the Bruins up 1-0 heading into singles play.
While the Bruins eventually took the match 4-0, the individual matches were close as five of the six went to three sets.
The Devils took the first set on the even courts while UCLA managed to win on courts one, three and five. Court five was the first singles match to finish and the only one that didn't go the distance.
After losing the first set 6-4 to No. 16 Ena Shibahara, No. 53 Lauryn John-Baptiste battled back to claim the second set and force a third, and took a lead in the final set before the match was suspended.
Tereza Kolarova was also on the comeback trail before the match was called. She lost the first set 7-5 on court six, but cruised to a win in the second set and had a 4-3 lead in the third.
"Anytime you have five three-set matches, it's a real battle," McInerney said. "You have to give credit to UCLA for playing a bit better down the stretch. We'll have to recover to get ready for another tough one tomorrow."
With the UCLA result, the Devils move to 5-3 in conference play with two matches to go. The first of the final two will be Saturday at noon in Los Angeles against USC.
