Sun Devils Cap Senior Day with Big MarksSun Devils Cap Senior Day with Big Marks
TEMPE – The Sun Devil track and field team wrapped up its home schedule with a big day at the Sun Angel Classic that included another school record from Magdalyn Ewen and an impressive outdoor debut from Cole Riddle.

The final day of the Sun Angel Classic was senior day for 14 Devils, including Ewen, who rose to the special occasion by throwing personal bests in both the discus and shot put.

"I'm really happy today went the way that it went with it being the day that it is," Ewen said. "My whole family, a huge group from my high school, my aunt and uncle were here, and to see all of the parents from all of the athletes being recognized today just added to everything else surrounding the meet."

Following her NCAA record-setting performance from Friday, Ewen recorded a school record in the shot put that also put her at No. 1 in the world in 2018 and No. 2 in NCAA history.

The mark of 19.22m/63-0.75 feet is just 11 centimeters off of the collegiate record that was set just two season ago.

"I think this was the greatest throwing weekend ever by a woman," coach Greg Kraft said. "When you look at her training and her youth in the sport, typically those kinds of marks are for post-collegiate athletes, so for her to do all of that as a fifth-year senior in one weekend is truly remarkable."

She opened the day with a discus heave that put her at the top of the NCAA for 2018 as well, giving her leads for all three of her events, making her the only athlete regardless of gender to lead the NCAA in three events this season.

"The scary part is – and I believe coach Blutreich when he says it and Maggie when she says it – there's more in the tank," Kraft said.

While Ewen was throwing in the maroon and gold at home for the last time, true freshman Riddle was making his first appearance as a Sun Devil at Sun Angel Stadium.

He cleared 5.35m/17-6.5 feet on his first attempt at the bar and put himself into the Sun Devil record book for the second time in his young career.

"It was more than I expected to happen," Riddle said. "I was just happy to clear the first bar after sitting out for four weeks, but it just kept coming and I just kept having fun."

Already the owner of the fourth-best indoor pole vault mark in school history, Riddle's jump from Saturday put him at fourth outdoors as well.

Nathan Hiett and Mason Ford made the most of their last home meet as the two seniors set personal bests in their respective events.

Hiett finished eighth in the premiere section of the pole vault with a clearance of 5.25m/17-2.75 feet, the seventh-best mark in school history, and good for 14th in the West Region. Along with Riddle (seventh), Michael Chadwick (30), Matthew Eckles (T34) and Grant Sisserson (T34), all five of the Sun Devil men's pole vaulters hold marks in the top-35 of the region.

In the high jump, Ford's personal best of 2.10m/6-10.75 put him at 16th in the region and fourth in the Pac-12.

Along with Ewen, Jessica Barreira doubled-up on victories Saturday with wins in the triple jump and javelin throw. Her winning mark in the javelin of 45.23m/148-4 feet was a PR and moved her to 39th in the descending order list. As for her triple jump, the 12.51m/41-0.5-foot leap has the junior in 26th in the West and fifth in the conference.

On the track, senior Alethia Marrero put herself into the top-20 in the region in another event for the second outing in-a-row. In a blazing women's 400-meter run that produced seven of the top-16 times in the West this season, Marrero clocked a 53.88, which puts her at seventh in one of the fastest conferences in the country.

Marrero currently sits at third in the region, and atop the conference, in the 800, and is a leg on the 4x400-meter relay team that ran its fastest time of the season Saturday with the quartet of Sha'Maya Flanagan, Marrero, Sierra Irvin and Kalei Matthews combining for a 3:38.92.

"Even though Sierra didn't run the way she wanted to, it was good to get her back into the mix with that relay team" Kraft said. "We're starting to put pieces together as we get closer to conference and that's what's important."

The premiere running of the women's 1,500-meter run saw a former Sun Devil in Chelsey Albertson take the win, while Alexis Nichols clocked a two-second PR of 4:24.25 – good for ninth in the Pac-12.

The conclusion of the 39th Sun Angel Classic was the end of the Devils' home slate, and the rest of their meets this season will be on the road.

Their first road competition will be the Triton Invitational next weekend in San Diego.
