TEMPE – The Arizona State women's tennis team got back to winning ways when they defeated the California Golden Bears, 4-0, Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The win marked ASU's first victory since its 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount back on March 17, and it was the Devils' first win over the Bears since 2011.
"They're good," coach Sheila McInerney said. "They're a really good team, and a perennial contender, so I give a lot of credit to the girls for beating them today."
McInerney's squad came out with a mission to up their doubles play after Friday's display against the Cardinal, and ASU accomplished that as they won all three doubles matches.
"We started things off by playing very well in doubles," McInerney said. "We had a lot more energy, third doubles didn't play too well yesterday but played great today and court one took care of business as they do."
No. 48 John-Baptiste/Hattingh got off the court first as they toppled No. 52 Hauger/Rosenqvist, 6-2, to bring their record to 12-0 through 16 outings. Klanecek/Fossa Huergo won on court three to clinch the doubles point for the Devils, but No. 35 Slaysman/Kolarova finished seconds later and ASU was awarded wins on all three courts.
"We got some momentum heading into singles, but we knew it would still be difficult because Cal is tough," McInerney said. "They're a really good team and this was nowhere near a 4-0 match."
The Bears didn't let the deficit slow them down, though. Cal and ASU went back-and-forth on all six courts during singles play, and all but two matches ended up going into a third set or was on its way to a third before play was suspended.
After recording the first blemish on her record against ranked women Friday against No. 3 Michaela Gordon, freshman Lauryn John-Baptiste got back into the win column with her straight-sets victory over No. 36 Julia Rosenqvist, 6-2, 7-5.
John-Baptiste was one of five Sun Devils to take the first set against Cal opponents, but the Bears refused to go away and forced third sets on three of those courts.
The only other court that ended in a sweep was court four where No. 108 Savannah Slaysman defeated Maria Smith 7-5, 6-3.
Slaysman's win clinched the match for the Devils, but Tereza Kolarova's comeback win on court six put them at match-point.
Kolarova dropped the first set 4-6, but came back to dominate Hana Mraz, 6-3, 6-1, to win her fifth match of the season.
"It was a battle," McInerney said. "Ilze was in the third set, Tereza had a third set, Nicole was in the third set and Sasa was on her way to a third set. I'm happy for the girls. This was a tough win and we haven't had one of those against a good, high-quality team like Cal in a while."
With the sweep of Cal, ASU moves to 11-5 (3-2) on the season and the Golden Bears drop to 8-6 (4-2).
Next weekend, the Devils take on the the Evergreen State's Pac-12 representatives as Washington State and Washington come to town Friday and Saturday. Washington's match will be ASU's senior day and USTA Family Day.
