PULLMAN, Wash. – Arizona State homered twice but could not bring across the timely run in a 4-3 defeat in 11 innings on Friday night against Washington State in Pullman, Wash.
Spencer Torkelson and Hunter Bishop each homered in the contest and eight different Sun Devils had a hit, but ASU was unable to muster a go-ahead run in the contest. Gage Workman was 2-for-4, the only Sun Devil with multiple hits. Lyle Lin extended his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games - his second streak of 10+ games this season – and Gage Canning kept his streak alive of reaching base in all 26 games this season.
Torkelson, who broke Barry Bonds' ASU freshman home run record on Thursday, wasted no time adding his 13th of the season on Friday as he went yard in the first inning on a solo shot to right center. The home run put Torkelson in a tie for the national lead in the category.
Alec Marsh was solid on the mound as he went a career-best 5.2 innings and struck out a career-high seven batters to one walk, allowing three earned runs in the start.
Washington State responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, however, taking a 2-1 lead and forcing ASU to have to come back for the second consecutive night.
Marsh settled in after the tough opening stretch, retiring 11 batters in a row beginning in the second inning to keep ASU within striking distance.
ASU eventually backed it up with some offense in the top of the sixth, with Canning singling and Torkelson drawing a walk to move him into scoring position for Lin. Lin responded with an RBI single through the left side to bring Canning across and even the game at 2-2.
A hit batter with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning ended Marsh's streak of mowing down the Cougar lineup at 11 consecutive out. That runner would eventually come across after a two-out single to put WSU back up, 3-2, after six innings.
ASU would net things again in the eighth inning on Bishop's solo no-doubter to left field, his second of the season bringing things even at 3-3.
Washington State put two runners on with just one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Connor Higgins entered the contest to induce a 6-4-3 double play to get the Sun Devils out of the inning unscathed.
Neither team was able to capitalize in the ninth, sending ASU to its third extra-inning game this season. Both teams put a runner on the base path in the 10th inning but neither could capitalize, sending the game to the 11th inning – the longest for the Sun Devils since the 2016 season.
A leadoff walk and a hit by pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning put the winning run in scoring position for WSU, which capitalized on a one-out single to win the game in extra innings for the second consecutive night.
Corrigan would go 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while Higgins was efficient in 2.2 innings of relief as he gave ASU chances to win it in extras before being tagged with the leadoff walk in the 11th to take the loss.
ASU returns to action against the Cougars on Saturday, March 31 to complete the series at 12 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network.
