PULLMAN, Wash. – Eli Lingos went the distance for the first time in his career with his complete game shutout of Washington State in a 7-0 victory for Sun Devil Baseball on Saturday afternoon in Pullman, Wash.
The senior southpaw struck out seven and walked just one batter as he became the first ASU pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout since Ryan Hingst's no-hitter against Cal in 2016. Lingos scattered six hits on 122 pitches – 88 of which were thrown for strikes.
In each of his last three starts, Lingos has set career best in innings pitched as he went 7.2 innings against Oregon, 8.0 innings against #16 UCLA and now 9.0 innings this afternoon. He has not allowed any runs since the fourth inning of the Oregon contest, extending his streak of scoreless innings to 20.2 with today's effort en route to a 5-1 record while bringing his ERA down to 2.02 for the season in the process.
Lingos' defense helped get things done behind him, playing flawless ball outside of a Lingos throwing error late in the game. The defense turned one double play and helped to keep the Washington State offense to 0-for-7 hitting with runners in scoring position behind several highlight reel plays.
On offense, Myles Denson made his way into the starting lineup for the first time this season and responded with three hits on four at-bats with an RBI and a double. The three hits were the first three hits of the season for the sophomore. Drew Swift also went 3-for-4 on the day while Taylor Lane and Carter Aldrete each added two-RBI singles in the contest.
Gage Workman got the Devils on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to shallow right field that allowed Alika Williams to slide in safely on the play at the plate for an early 1-0 lead. Workman would save a couple runs in the bottom half of the inning as well as he made an incredible leaping grab on a two-out line drive with a pair of runners in scoring position to keep WSU off the board.
Lane continued his impressive series with a two-out, two-RBI single in the top if the third and that was followed by a Denson RBI single – his second hit of the game and of the season – to make it a 4-0 game.
Lingos did the rest after that, at one point retiring 16 consecutive batters between the second and seventh innings.
ASU padded its lead in the top of the ninth, bringing one across on a bases-loaded hit by pitch ahead of Aldrete's two-RBI single to give Lingos a commanding 7-0 advantage to work with to close the game out.
The Sun Devils have a busy week ahead, taking on Cal State Fullerton in a two-game midweek series on Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting Cal for a three-game set in Pac-12 action beginning on Friday.
