TEMPE – Lauryn John-Baptiste led the charge for the shorthanded Devils as they took down the Loyola Marymount Lions, 4-1, Saturday in Tempe to get to double-digit wins on the season.
Arizona State started the match in a hole as Sasa Klanecek was ruled out before doubles play began, bringing the Devils' active roster down to five. With the freshman's absence, ASU only played two doubles teams and conceded the point to the Lions on court six.
"You tell the kids, basically, you've already lost third doubles and six singles," coach Sheila McInerney said. "I thought we played some of the best doubles we've played in a long time, and I think knowing we didn't have third doubles helped with that. Our energy was really good and LMU's two teams are really good."
Down 1-0 before the first serve, ASU had an uphill battle against a Lions team that came into the day on a seven-match win-streak and with one of the top-ranked doubles duos in the NCAA in No. 33 Veronica Miroschnichenko and Eva Marie Voracek.
The Lion duo came up against John-Baptiste/Hattingh on court one. It was the tandem's first match on court one, but the unbeaten newcomers didn't fold in the spotlight and handled LMU's twosome, 6-4.
On court two, the reassembling of the No. 37 coupling of Kolarova/Slaysman paid off as they outlasted Anderson/Romeka, 7-5, to give ASU the doubles point despite defaulting the match on court three.
Even with the doubles point in hand for the first time in two outings, ASU entered singles play even with LMU at 1 apiece.
But the point given to the opposition would be their only one on the day as Savannah Slaysman, Nicole Fossa Huergo and John-Baptiste all got off the court in straight sets.
No. 115 Slaysman handled her match on court four 6-2, 6-1, to extend her win-streak to four, and Fossa Huergo took care of Anderson to remain perfect at home and keep her unbeaten streak in-tact heading into next weekend's match
"Savannah got on and off the court quickly, Nicole got off fast, Tereza won a tight first set and of course Lauryn played a great match to clinch it for us," McInerney said. "I'm really proud of them for how they handled that today. We've got a pretty young team who doesn't really know the situation, but I think winning that doubles point really helped the girls a lot."
Court one's marquee matchup featured two ranked women who were both undefeated against ranked foes in 2018. No. 84 John-Baptiste and No. 30 Miroschnichenko had only dropped two matches all season heading their clash, but John-Baptiste came out the victor with her fifth win over ranked women and eighth overall this season.
ASU gets back into the Pac-12 gauntlet with a trip to Eugene for a matchup with No. 20 Oregon.
