Freshman Bats Impress in Series Finale Loss to UNCWFreshman Bats Impress in Series Finale Loss to UNCW
TEMPE – The Sun Devil baseball team fell in game three of a non-conference weekend series against UNCW, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

ASU got on the board first in the bottom of the second behind the bats of its freshmen. Singles from Trevor Hauver and Luke Leisenring paved the way from two-out single from Drew Swift to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.

Boyd Vander Kooi battled through a start in which he did not have his best stuff, still managing to go 5.2 innings. Vander Kooi would exit in the six having struck out seven Seahawk batters.

UNCW answered with three unanswered runs to stake a 3-1 lead after 6 innings before ASU threated in the seventh.

Back-to-back singles from Alika Williams and Swift put two runners on for Spencer Torkelson with two outs and a chance to take the lead. The freshman took a high fast ball for a ride to about 409 feet into Phoenix Municipal Stadiums 410-foot center field that was caught at the warning track to keep the score at 3-1.

The Sun Devils would threaten once again in the home half of the eighth, but nothing would come out of a leadoff walk drawn by Carter Aldrete. Left-handers Dellan Raish and Chaz Montoya would combine to keep UNCW off the board over the final 3.1 innings of the game, striking out three Seahawk batters each.

With the Arizona State offense still in striking distance, the Sun Devils would come up to bat in the bottom of the ninth in need of a rally. ASU was unable to create any offense, as Seahawks closer Clark Cota earned his fifth save of the season preserving the 3-1 victory.

Notes:
Gage Canning extended his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest by a Sun Devil to start the season since at least 1998.

Chaz Montoya has allowed just one earned run in 12.1 innings (0.73 ERA) pitched, earning four saves this season. His great start to the season comes after finishing with a 5.31 ERA in 59.1 innings pitched last season.

The 6-9 batters in the Sun Devil lineup (Hauver, Leisenring, Williams, and Swift) were all true freshman. They finished the contest a combined 7-for-13 (.538) with Swift recording ASU's lone RBI.

Freshman Trevor Hauver notched his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
