BOULDER, Colo. – True freshman Tereza Kolarova battled back in the final match of the day to complete Arizona State's comeback victory on the road against Colorado, and move the Sun Devils to 9-3 (2-0) on the season after their first weekend of Pac-12 play.

After uncharacteristically dropping the doubles point, the Devils found themselves in a hole heading into singles play.

While the collaborative efforts of Ilze Hattingh and Lauryn John-Baptiste put ASU up on court two, 4-2, the other two courts went the way of the home side as Kolarova/Fossa Huergo and Klanecek/Slaysman both fell 6-1 before the court two match could finish.

"It was certainly a hard fought win and we will take it," coach Sheila McInerney said. "As I said before, it isn't easy to win on the road, and today was a testament to that. Colorado battled hard for sure, and once again Nos. 1 and 3 doubles struggled big time, but we bounced back well in the singles."

Colorado took a 2-0 advantage after Ilze Hattingh was stifled on court two, 6-3, 6-1. The loss snapped the newcomer's three-match win streak.

In a tough spot with just five matches to play, the Devils responded to the pressure and tied the match at 2 apiece after John-Baptiste and Nicole Fossa Huergo got off of their respective courts in straight sets.

Both Devils won their first sets 7-5, then John-Baptiste closed out her match with a 6-2 second set, while Fossa Huergo found herself down early in the second set. The senior didn't panic and fought back, winning three-straight games to close out the contest on court three and even up the score with the hosts.

Savannah Slaysman took to the court left vacant by the court two match, and made quick work of her Buffalo opponent, overwhelming Brigitte Beck 6-1, 6-0. Slaysman has won six of her last 10 outings and lost only two since dual match play began.

Up 3-2 with two opportunities left to clinch the match, the Devils looked to be in good position to leave Boulder with another conference win.

Freshman Sasa Klanecek and Kyra Wojcik traded lopsided sets to force a third that Wojcik managed to win. It was Klanecek's first loss of the season and first time being taken to three sets since November.

The match came down to true freshman Kolarova on court six.

Kolarova got down early after dropping the first set 7-5. Coming into this morning, in three-set matches this year where Kolarova had dropped the first set, the freshman was 1-0 with two unfinished matches.

She improved to 2-0 when she came back to win the match and clinch the victory for ASU, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.

"I thought Lauryn, Savannah and Nicole played well in their singles, and Tereza came through when we had to have it with the score tied at 3-3," McInerney said. "Hopefully a match like this will prove valuable down the road as we will undoubtedly have a few nail-biters the rest of the way."

With the win, ASU improved to 6-0 in Pac-12 play against the Buffaloes, and completed its fifth-straight perfect series against Utah and Colorado since the two programs debut Pac-12 season in 2012.

"It's always nice to get a win and we look forward to playing getting back and playing at home next weekend," McInerney said.

Up next for the Devils is their final home non-conference match of 2018 against Loyola Marymount Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
