HILTON HEAD, S.C. – After the first 18 holes of play, No. 6 Arizona State's Olivia Mehaffey currently sits on top of the individual leaderboard at the prestigious Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
Mehaffey's six birdies, five on the front nine, helped guide her to a 66 on the day, one stroke shy of her collegiate career low set earlier this season at the Windy City Collegiate in October, a tournament the Sun Devils ultimately won.
The Sun Devils (293/T7) are in a close race for the team title as just nine strokes separate the top-10 teams and four strokes separate teams three through nine. Earlier in the day, ASU moved all the way up the leaderboard to a tie for first before the team race tightened.
"As a team, we are still right in the race for first place and we did a lot of things well today," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "Tomorrow, the goal is to win the day and move up the leaderboard, which I believe we can accomplish. Olivia played one of the best rounds of golf I have watched her play in her college career so far."
Madison Kerley shot a three-over 74 and, in a very tight race, is part of a 10-way tie. Raquel Olmos (76), Sophia Zeeb (77), and Roberta Liti (79) rounded out ASU's team.
Alabama currently holds a one-stroke lead in first place followed by Northwestern and Arkansas in the top three.
The 18-team field will play their second set of 18 holes on Saturday, Mar. 3 starting at 8:30 am ET/6:30 am MT. The Sun Devils tee off between 8:30-9:10 am ET/6:30-7:10 am MT with North Carolina and Georgia.
