NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second-straight night, Yale educated the Sun Devils in overtime at Ingalls Rink, defeating ASU 4-3.
The game unfolded nearly the same as Friday, with the Bulldogs (11-11-1) outshooting the Sun Devils (7-18-5) and sophomore goaltender Joey Daccord keeping ASU in the game. The only difference tonight was the Sun Devils were the ones battling back to tie the game on three, separate occasions.
"It's always good to battle back," said head coach Greg Powers. "We know we have resilience. It's a disappointing one with another mistake in overtime. The defensemen stepped up and didn't get help from our F3, and that just can't happen. Daccord battled his heart out, and he deserved a better fate. We didn't deserve to win that game."
Daccord finished the night with 52 saves on 56 shots, totaling 95 saves 112 shots faced this weekend. He was just one save short of the program record (53), which he set against another ECAC team last year in Quinnipiac.
Speaking of program records, freshman Johnny Walker broke the ASU program record for goals scored by a freshman with his 10th of the year. Late in the third period, just five minutes after Yale took the 3-2 lead, Walker beat Bulldog goaltender Corbin Kaczperski to knot it up at three and help force overtime.
Walker's 10 goals rank him in a tie for 5th in the country among freshman goal scorers.
"Johnny is the best freshman goal scorer we've had and he's proven it," said Powers. "He's got four more games to go and he'll continue to score. He's a good goal scorer."
Fellow freshman and defenseman Max Balinson netted his third of the year -- which ranks him in a tie for 9th in the country among freshman defensemen in goals scored – to put ASU on the board late in the first.
After Yale took the 2-1 lead off a turnover in the ASU zone early in the third period, sophomore defenseman and point leader Brinson Pasichnuk decided to score in a way he hadn't yet this season. Brinson buried a rebound in front off a shot from junior forward Anthony Croston, tying the game up for the second time.
It was Brinson's seventh goal of the season, putting him in a tie for 13th among defensemen in the country and just three out of first. He continues to pace the team with his 22nd point of the season.
Despite starting overtime on the power play, ASU couldn't manage to find the back of the net. Two minutes and 55 seconds into the extra period, Yale's Evan Smith drove down the left side before snapping one that beat Daccord shortside off the back bar and out.
"Taking this team to overtime two nights in a row is impressive," said Powers of the weekend. "That's a good hockey team. We just made two mistakes in overtime you can't make. You give up two 2-on-1's in the final frame and they score on both of them. It's a backbreaker."
The Sun Devils enter a weekend off before hitting the road again to the upper peninsula of Michigan for a two-game series at Michigan Tech on Feb. 16-17.
