TEMPE – The No. 20 Sun Devil women's tennis team stayed perfect at home and got to 4-1 on the season when it swept a feisty Gonzaga team, 4-0, at the Whiteman Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

"We all played well today," coach Sheila McInerney said. "We knew Gonzaga would be a good team. The doubles could have gone either way when we had match points on two doubles, and we were down match points in three doubles, so we sort of squeaked it out."

The Sun Devils kept their doubles point streak alive against the Bulldogs, even as all three courts came down to the wire with two being decided 7-5 and the other 7-6.

The Devils went down early when No. 28 Slaysman/Kolarova fell on court one 7-6(3) to the Zags' duo of Whittle/Rosas. Things weren't looking great as both pairs were still in dogfights on the remaining courts.

Fossa Huergo/Klanecek stormed back on court three against Bourguignon/Tsuruta and managed to win 7-5 to put the balance of the doubles point on undefeated Hattingh/John-Baptiste on court two.

The sophomore from South Africa and true freshman from England entered play today at 5-0 in 2018 and 4-0 in dual match play.

Garley/Ketels stuck with the ASU tandem for most of the match, but the Sun Devils turned it on at 5-5 and won the match 7-5 to clinch the doubles point.

McInerney tinkered with the singles lineup and swapped Ilze Hattingh for Lauryn John-Baptiste and moved Tereza Kolarova down to court five to bring Savannah Slaysman up to court four.

"I was very pleased with the way we came out in singles," McInerney said. "Gonzaga had a great outing with UNLV yesterday, and UNLV gave us a tussle on Friday, so we really knew we would have to come out and performed well in singles."

The tweaking worked for the Devils as they wrapped up the dual match in less than an hour, winning five first sets out of the six singles matches and never looking back. ASU won in straight sets on courts two, four and six to clinch McInerney's 499th career win.

Sasa Klanecek's win-streak reached six when the true freshman handled Kate Ketels, dropping only one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

"She's just a great competitor," McInerney said.  "Sasa is fun to coach and fun to be around. She's really passionate and you can see it all of the time. She's going to fight hard for her teammates, and we have a lot of kids like that, but I think she's done a great job."

It didn't take long for the Devils to wrap up the match after Klanecek's dominant display on six. Shortly after, No. 83  Slaysman defeated her opponent Haruna Tsuruta, 6-2, 6-1, and on court two, Hattingh snapped a slump by defeating Graciela Rosas, 6-2, 6-2.

The win was Hattingh's first on court two this season as she had spent the start of 2018 as the Devils' No. 1.

Although the other three matches were left unfinished, John-Baptiste was up a set in her first ever match on court one, and Kolarvoa was on the verge of rebounding after dropping her first set. Nicole Fossa Huergo took the first set and was down in the second set before the match was decided, but was on the comeback trail as well.

ASU went 2-0 this weekend at home against the UNLV Rebels (3-3, 0-0 MWC) and Gonzaga Bulldogs. They moved to 3-0 at the Whiteman Tennis Center this season, and will look to improve to 4-0 at home in their next outing against Santa Clara, Feb. 17 at noon.

The matchup with the Mustangs is more than just a dual match for the Devils as a win would mark McInerney's 500th in her 34-year ASU career.
