TEMPE, Ariz. -- One for the thumb, Gym Devil standout freshman Cairo Leonard-Baker has captured her fifth Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the week honor, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
By virtue of the recognition, Leonard-Baker joins prestigious company - Utah's MyKayla Skinner and California's Toni-Ann Williams - as just one of three gymnasts in conference history to garner the award five or more times. The Oakland, Calif. native also becomes just the second Gym Devil in program history to earn league honors on five separate occasions, joining 2004 national champion and five-time all-american Ashley Kelly in the feat.
Leading the charge in Arizona State's 196.725-195.025, Territorial Cup victory over Arizona this past Saturday, Leonard-Baker captured her fourth all-around title (39.475) of the season to elevate the Gym Devils to their 21st-best team total in program history.
In the effort, Leonard-Baker recorded career-bests on floor (9.950) and vault (9.850), respectively, while earning first-place finishes on floor and bars (9.875) to move her season titles total to 12.
Through eight weeks of competition Leonard-Baker ranks as the top freshman nationally in the all-around, with a season average of 39.455 to her credit. She also is positioned within the top-10 on an event basis on bars (10th, 9.905) and floor (10th, 9.905).
Collectively, the No. 13 Gym Devils will close out the regular season with three consecutive road meets. Up next, the Gym Devils will travel to the Midwest to face Big Ten opponent, No. 19 Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. The meet is slated for a 3 p.m. MT start on Saturday, March 3 and will be live streamed on the Big Ten Network (BTN) Plus.
