PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The No. 6 Sun Devil women's golf team, the reigning NCAA champions, opened the spring championship season at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Sunday and are tied for first after one round of play.
"We had a very good day and I am so proud of the fight in this team," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "This is a great golf course and the conditions were much tougher on the back side. Each player fought to the finish."
Individually, Olivia Mehaffey tied her second-lowest score of the season (68) and sits in the top spot through the first 18 holes. Teammate Madison Kerley (T8/71) joins Mehaffey in the top-10 with her third-lowest score of the season.
Mehaffey birdied five holes, including four on the front nine, and shot a hole-in-one on a par-3 hole two.
"Olivia had a fantastic hole-in-one on No. 2 and all five contributed to a great start to our spring. We have a few holes where we need to execute our strategy a little better but we look forward to another opportunity to play a great golf course tomorrow."
Seniors Sophia Zeeb and Roberta Liti are part of a tie for 19th (73) while Raquel Olmos Ros shot 79 in the first round.
ASU was on top of the leaderboard for much of the afternoon before rival Arizona moved into a tie for first with the Sun Devils.
Tournament play will pick up again on Monday morning starting at 10 am MT/9 am PT with another 18 holes for the 18-team field.
