The Arizona State men's tennis team defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs in the final match of the ASU Invitational. The Sun Devils went 3-0 in the inaugural tournament after defeating LMU and Fresno State.
The Devils came out aggressive, taking the doubles point for the first time this season. Benjamin Hannestad and Tim Reuhl sailed past Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiryk 6-1. Thomas Wright and Andrea Bolla clinched the first point up for grabs defeating Josh Ortlip and Axel Damiens 6-2.
Cal Poly's Karl Enander and Dominick Bechard led 5-3 against Makey Rakotomalala and Pierre Louis Dodens prior to the game being suspended.
Pierre Louis Dodens notched his first victory of the season on court six, defeating Karl Enander in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. The Sun Devils lead early 2-0.
Makey Rakotomalala, undefeated in the ASU Invitational, downed Josh Ortlip 6-3, 6-3 on court one. Rakotomalala is ranked No. 90 in the latest ITA poll for singles.
Down 3-0, the Cal Poly Mustangs got on the scoreboard as Antoine Noel defeated Thomas Wright 6-3, 6-3 on court four.
The match was clinched on court three. Andrea Bolla, fresh off wins against LMU and in doubles against Fresno State, defeated Axel Damiens to give ASU the 4-1 victory.
The No. 38 ITA ranked player in singles, Benjamin Hannestad, won the first set 6-3 and led the second set 5-4 before play was suspended on the Sun Devil victory. Will Kirkman battled with Alexander Stater on court five but fell short in the first set 5-7. Play did not resume after Stater pulled ahead 4-1 in the second set.
The Sun Devils head for their first road trip of the season, traveling to California next weekend to play San Deigo and Pepperdine on Feb. 17 and 18.
