TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Hockey picked up their fifth tie of the season on Friday night, as they battled to a 2-2 draw with the Quinnipiac Bobcats at Oceanside Ice Arena. Redshirt junior Louie Rowe blasted a shot to win the 3-on-3 overtime portion of the game.
ASU (7-13-5) is now 3-1-1 in their last five games, and came one swift swing away from putting a tick in the win column with just 17 seconds remaining in the 5-on-5 portion of overtime.
"That's a good effort, a good hockey game, and was a fun hockey game for everybody here," said head coach Greg Powers. "They came out to watch against a great program. We can build off that."
After a scoreless opening frame, Quinnipiac (8-12-4) struck first with a shorthanded tally just two minutes into the second period. A miscue at the blue line resulted in a turnover, and Duane took the puck the length of the ice before lifting one over sophomore goaltender Joey Daccord for the 1-0 lead.
Less than six minutes later, freshman forward Johnny Walker struck again for his third goal in two games. With four seconds left on the power-play opportunity, Walker made a move at the top of the right circle before snapping one past Bobcat freshman Keith Petruzzelli to tie the game at one.
As the clock wound down in the middle frame, the Pasichnuk brothers brought some of the Bonnyville magic to Tempe. Steenn went down with another Quinnipiac player at center ice while his brother controlled the puck into the neutral zone. Steenn popped up, retrieved his stick, and beat his man to the far post as Brinson streaked down the left wall. With nine seconds remaining, Brinson sauced one right on the tape of Steenn backdoor for the tap in and 2-1 lead. It was Steenn's first goal of the season, and Brinson's 11th assist.
"We've definitely done that a few times back in Bonnyville," laughed Steenn. "It felt good to do it again, and it was even more special that my little brother helped me get [that first goal]."
The Sun Devils would enter the third period with the 2-1 lead, but couldn't hold on.
Seven minutes into the final period, the Bobcats capitalized on the power play, killing ASU's streak of nine-straight killed penalties.
Despite back and forth opportunities, the game would head to overtime.
In overtime, with 20 seconds remaining in the 5-on-5 portion, the Devils entered the zone with an odd-man rush. Tick-tack-toe found its way backdoor to Brinson, who nearly tapped in the pass into the empty net, but no dice.
Late in the 3-on-3 overtime, Rowe came right off the bench and was set up with a one-timer from freshman defenseman Jacob Wilson, which he buried with a blast.
The game officially ended in a tie.
Saturday wraps up the two-game series as the Devils and Bobcats meet in Glendale at Gila River Arena. Tickets still remain on Ticketmaster.com and at the Gila River box office.
