TEMPE, Ariz. – Despite an hour and a half rain delay to begin the spring season, the Sun Devil women's tennis team never faltered as they swept Northern Arizona University, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
"I don't think the rain affected us, we came out the same," coach Sheila McInerney said. "We knew we were going up against some good doubles teams, but I think our two and three doubles played really well."
True freshman Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh made quick work of the Lumberjacks to kick off doubles play, needing only seven games to take a doubles match for the Devils on court two, 6-1. Right next to the pair on court three was senior Nicole Fossa Huergo and Sasa Klanecek, whose 6-2 victory clinched the doubles point for ASU.
Moving onto singles play, Tereza Kolarova dominated on court five, nabbing a singles point in just under 40 minutes, 6-0, 6-1.
"NAU competed really well today and they had some really feisty kids," McInerney said. "We didn't try to do too much and we got some opportunities and we took advantage of it."
Klanecek followed suit, defeating Madi Moore, 6-1, 6-1, just a few minutes later. The Devils clinched the match win when Fossa Huergo rolled through Ellie Millard in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The Devils played out the remainder of the matches despite notching the win, allowing Savannah Slaysman (6-3, 6-2), Ilze Hattingh (6-2, 6-3) and Lauryn John-Baptiste (6-7, 6-0, 1-0 (3)) to contribute wins to the match.
The Sun Devils are back into action this Thursday, Jan. 25 as they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for the ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Oklahoma State University.
