EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 18 Arizona State women's basketball team was on the wrong end of a 21-5 third quarter on Sunday as No. 8 Oregon used the 10-minute scoring spree to remain unbeaten in Pac-12 play with a 74-64 win on Sunday.
Kianna Ibis led ASU with 22 points, Courtney Ekmark had 15 and Charnea Johnson-Chapman added 12 for the Sun Devils (13-5, 4-2 Pac-12), who dropped into a four-way tie for third place in the Pac-12 – No. 14 UCLA (13-4, 4-2), No. 22 Oregon State (13-4, 4-2) No. 24 Cal (13-4, 4-2) – with the loss.
The Ducks (17-2, 6-0 Pac-12) connected on 66 percent of their shots, outrebounded ASU 25-23 and forced the Sun Devils into more turnovers (14) than assists (12) for only the fifth time this season.
Oregon's quartet of Sabrina Ionescu (26 points), Ruthy Hebard (20 points), Maite Cazorla (15 points) and Satou Sabally (10 points) accounted for 71 of the Ducks' 74 points.
The Sun Devils were without the Pac-12's leader in 3-point field goal percentage and the team's second-leading scorer, Jamie Ruden, who also missed nearly the entire second half of ASU's 57-54 loss at No. 22 Oregon State on Friday.
Murphy's law seemed to dictate nearly everything about ASU's third quarter as the Sun Devils made one of nine shots and did not register their first points of the frame until Ibis' bucket and foul with 92 seconds remaining. The three-point play ended a run of 16 straight points by the Ducks, who made nine of their 11 field goals in the quarter. Hebard's jumper with 46 seconds left gave the Ducks a 59-39 lead entering the final quarter.
Despite the deficit they faced there was no quit in the Sun Devils, who would score 25 points over the last 10 minutes, the most points in a quarter by either team. Ekmark, who had a game-high four 3-pointers led the way with nine points while Johnson-Chapman added six points. Reili Richardson and Russell also added four points each.
Oregon got out to a fast start as it made 77 percent of its field goals and led 22-12 after one quarter.
The Sun Devils would fight back as they knocked down 56 percent of their shots in the second stanza. Ekmark (2-3), Ibis (1-1) and Kiara Russell (1-1) combined to hit 80 percent of their shots from long range in helping ASU outscore the Ducks 22-16 in the quarter. Russell's triple with 15 seconds remaining got ASU within four points, 38-34, at the half.
Ibis' 22-point outing represented the third time in ASU's last five games that she scored 20 or more points. In ASU's win at Utah on New Year's Eve, Ibis scored a career-high 30 points and then would add 26 more in ASU's win against Cal on Jan. 5.
The Sun Devils return home next weekend for games against Utah on Friday (special 11 a.m. start time for annual Sparky's Kids to College Field Trip Game) and vs. Colorado on Sunday (2 p.m. MT).
