ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Lauryn John-Baptiste recorded an early-season statement win Sunday at the second day of the Michigan Invitational as the Sun Devil freshman defeated the No. 23 woman in the NCAA in straight-sets.
The Sun Devils matched up against Texas Tech in singles play at the Varsity Tennis Center, and John-Baptiste drew 2017 all-Big 12 honoree Felicity Maltby, a sophomore standout from Sunnyvale, California.
John-Baptiste came into the day with momentum from her win Saturday, which was ASU's only singles win on the day, and handled Maltby 6-4, 6-4. She moves to 2-0 for the spring, and the freshman international from London continues to be a bright-spot on the Devils' roster.
In the rest of the singles matches, ASU fell to women from No. 8 Texas Tech, including Ilze Hattingh's tough outing against No. 5 Gabriella Talaba.
"Our singles play was disappointing," coach Sheila McInerney said. "Other than Lauryn, I felt the team let Texas Tech take control of the matches. Tech is a veteran team, and if you let them dictate play, you're in for a tough match. Credit to them, as they were better than we were today, though."
John-Baptiste also scored her first doubles win of 2018 with a new partner in Hattingh, and Nicole Fossa Huergo and Sasa Klanecek also picked up a doubles win against women of No. 13 Ohio State and No. 7 Georgia Tech, respectively.
"I thought we came out and played good doubles again, today," McInerney said. We had good energy and were the more aggressive doubles teams against what were good OSU and Georgia Tech teams. It was a bit unlucky that Savannah and Tereza didn't win, but they certainly had their chances."
John-Baptiste/Hattingh made easy work of the Buckeye duo of DeCoste/Wolf 6-2, and Fossa Huergo/Klanecek defeated Georgia Tech's Gizdova/Flores, 6-3. The third doubles match saw Savannah Slaysman and Tereza Kolarova drop a close match to Renaud/Jarlskog, 7-5.
The Michigan Invitational concludes on Monday with singles matches against No. 7 Georgia Tech and doubles matches against No. 10 Michigan. The action begins bright and early at 6:30 a.m. MST, and the Devils will come back to the courts at 9:30 a.m., to wrap up play.
"We've got two more really good teams tomorrow, so we look forward to ending strong," McInerney said.
