TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil women's golf's Linnea Strom, the No. 9 golfer in the Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), announced she will turn pro starting in spring 2018. After advancing to the final stage of LPGA Q-school in November, Strom will have status on the Symetra Tour in 2018.
"We wish Linnea all the best as she starts her professional career in January on the Symetra Tour," said Sun Devil head coach and reigning National Coach of the Year Missy-Farr Kaye. "Linnea has been an outstanding student-athlete at ASU and we are so grateful for all her contributions to our program and our university during her time here."
"Although it's difficult to lose one of your best players mid-year and we will not be able to fill Linnea's spot in January, we'll hope to do so for next year," Farr-Kaye continued. "I believe very strongly in my team, that they will come together, compete hard and continue to represent Arizona State in the outstanding manner that they always have."
Strom earned 20 top-10 finishes at ASU, including four this fall, and won a Pac-12 Championship as a freshman. She sealed the victory for the Sun Devils both in the NCAA semifinals vs. Stanford and the national championship match vs. Northwestern in May.
"I am excited for this new chapter and I will be focusing on the Symetra Tour in 2018," Strom said. "I want to thank everybody at ASU for supporting me through my college years. I have grown as a person and golfer and could not have asked for a better school and supporting system."
Olivia Mehaffey, the No. 13 player in Women's WAGR, Roberta Liti, Sophia Zeeb, and Madison Kerley, who were all part of the Sun Devil team who won a national title in 2017, and freshman Raquel Olmos-Ros return this spring for ASU.
The Sun Devils open the spring 2018 season with a dual vs. Denver at Superstition Mountain on Sunday, Jan. 28 before looking to defend their regional title at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (Feb. 11-13).
