ATLANTA – No. 7 Sun Devil women's golf opened play on Monday at the prestigious East Lake Cup, as Olivia Mehaffey finished just one stroke from an individual title, in a four-way tie for second.
"Olivia, from top to bottom, had a beautiful round of golf," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "I'm really happy for her. Tomorrow is going to be completely different, so we've got to pick ourselves up a little bit. We're a little bit battered from today, but this team is resilient, and they will come back really fired up to play match play tomorrow."
Mehaffey's one-under 71 on the day was thanks in part to five birdies and is tied for her best collegiate finish after finishing second at NCAA Regionals last season as a freshman.
Linnea Strom was in a tie for the lead halfway through, but had a tough first four holes on the back nine and ended the day in a tie for seventh (+2/74).
Awaiting the four-team field on the men's and women's side on Tuesday are match play semifinals which, on the women's side, are an exact replica of NCAA semifinals match-ups from May.
ASU will be the No. 4 seed and will face the No. 1 seed Stanford after No. 2 seed USC faces No. 3 seed Northwestern.
