KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Sun Devil women's tennis team completed play in Tennessee Sunday, with a round of singles matches versus athletes from No. 3 Ohio State, and two doubles matches against Wake Forest.
True freshman Sasa Klanecek capped off her weekend with her second individual win of the invitational as she defeated Ohio State's Maria Tyrina in three sets.
Klanecek took the first game 7-6 (3), then dropped the second 2-6 to the Buckeye senior. Despite the lopsided second game, Klanecek bounced back for the third game to win it 6-2 and take the match win.
Nicole Fossa Huergo had the Sun Devils' other singles win today as she took down Ohio State's Mary Beth Hurley despite dropping the first set, 4-6. Foss Huergo managed to eek out a 7-5 second set win before cruising to a 6-3 win in the third set for her first singles win of the weekend.
"I was pleased with the way we finished today particularly in singles play," head coach Sheila McInerney said. "Three of the four matches went three sets with Nicole and Sasa winning tough matches where they both competed extremely well."
Lauryn John-Baptiste nearly pulled off the upset against No. 33 Anna Sanford, but came up short in three sets.
The Sun Devil freshman came back to win the second set after dropping the first to the Buckeye standout, and lost 7-6 (5) in the match-clinching third set.
"I thought Lauryn also played well despite not getting the win," McInerney said. "She played a very good and experienced player in Anna Sanford, and just came up short losing 7-6 in the third set tiebreaker."
ASU had a rare slip-up in doubles against women of Wake Forest. The Devils have been dominant in doubles play this fall, but both pairings of John-Baptiste/Savannah Slaysman, and Fossa Huergo/Klanecek dropped matches to Davis/Chandler and Omirou/Meredith, respectively.
"It was a great tournament for the team from a competitive standpoint, which will help us come January when dual matches start," McInerney said. "We want to give a special thanks to Tennessee for being such great hosts."
The Devils head back to Tempe, but don't get much time off as they get set to host the ASU Thinderbird Invitational Nov. 3-5 at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.
