FORT WORTH, Texas – The Arizona State women's tennis team had a perfect day in doubles play, and all six of the Sun Devil women scored victories in the first day of competition at the Big Five Challenge, Friday in Fort Worth, Texas.
"Overall, I felt it was a really good day for the team," head coach Sheila McInerney said. "We all got two sets of singles matches and two doubles matches in against very good players."
The Sun Devils started the day off strong in the morning session, sweeping their opponents from the University of Georgia in doubles play.
The biggest win of the day came when Sun Devil seniors Kelley Anderson and Nicole Fossa Huergo took down the Bulldog pairing of Christofi and Coppoc comfortably, 6-2. The duo from Georgia is the ITA's No. 34 doubles tandem in the NCAA.
"Nicole and Kelley played really well in both doubles matches," McInerney said. "They are experienced doubles players and were very aggressive in both matches. They moved a lot and dominated the net, which was great to see."
On the other two doubles courts, Tereza Kolarova and Savannah Slaysman outdueled Jokic and Goulak, 6-3, and Lauryn John-Baptiste and Sasa Klanecek defeated Georgia's Gonzalez and Patterson, 6-4.
"I was particularly pleased with our doubles performances as we went 6-0 on the day playing three new pairings," McInerney said. "Singles worked out well, as each girl went 1-1 on the day."
The Sun Devils stayed hot during the evening session as all three doubles pairings cruised to 6-1 wins against women of Virginia Tech.
While ASU rolled early in doubles, the women of Georgia regrouped for singles play and managed to hold off the Sun Devils on five of the six courts, with Slaysman claiming the sole ASU victory during the morning session.
Slaysman played on court two against Jokic, who she came up against earlier in the day during the doubles match. Slaysman had the upper-hand once again in a one-on-one setting, despite dropping the first set, 4-6.
The script flipped in the second set as the sophomore Sun Devil surged to a 6-3 win, and went on to take the match with her 10-7 third-set win.
The opposite happened later in the day against the Hokies. Slaysman was moved up to court one and suffered her first lost of the fall season in three sets to Caroline Daxhelet, 7-6, 4-6, (10-6), but the other five Sun Devils won their respective matches.
Fossa Huergo made quick work of Elena Cerezo-Codina, 6-1, 6-2; Anderson, Kolarova and John-Baptiste all swept their opponents, and Klanecek overcame a first set loss to win her match 2-6, 6-2, (12-10).
"It was a long but productive day," McInerney said. "We'll be back at it early tomorrow, so we'll see how the team rebounds after a long day."
The Devils get back in action in Fort Worth Saturday morning at 7 a.m., against athletes from Texas Tech.
