Sun Devil Chun An Yu had a really good freshman "half" season for Matt Thurmond's @SunDevilMGolf squad last year.
He joined the team in January, won his third college tournament and posted the second-best freshmen stroke average in school history. The best mark is held by Jon Rahm, so right there tells you his initial college season was a good one.
Entering Friday, he is three wins away from a big-time national trophy that Sun Devils Jeff Quinney (2000), Phil Mickelson (1990) and Billy Mayfair (1987) have earned.
Despite losing the first three holes in his first match Wednesday and the first two holes in his morning match Thursday the sophomore (classes started Thursday) will face Vanderbilt's Theo Humphrey in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur with a 1:45 p.m. tee time Friday. FS1 will broadcast the four quarterfinals starting at 3 p.m.
Chun started his day with a 4-and-3 win over Zach Bachou with an incredible closing performance. After losing the first two holes and being down two holes through four, he went on to birdie four of the next 10 holes. Chun won seven of the final 10 holes and lost only one.
This is coming off him putting the finishing touches on a solid freshman season with an even-par 288 at the NCAA Championships in Chicago. On a day where 84 rounds produced an average score of 77.25, he fired a 1-over 73 with two birdies. His even-par score tied for the fourth-best by a freshman at the 2017 finals. His 71.61 stroke averages is the second-best by a freshman in Sun Devil history, behind only Jon Rahm's 71.37 in 2012-13.

His victory over Cal's Collin Morikawa -- the fourth-ranked amateur -- in the afternoon was less of a roller coaster. Chun was 2-up through seven then had it go back to even through 11. He then won the par-3 14th with a par and clinched the win with a birdie on 18 to win 2-up.Chun An Yu needed two putts for a #USAmateur quarterfinal spot. One was enough.
