NEW ORLEANS – The Arizona State track and field program had nine student-athletes included on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's All-Academic Team released Friday.
The individual honors come one day after the Sun Devil squads earned All-Academic Team honors from the USTFCCCA.
Three Sun Devil men made the prestigious list, including seniors CJ Albertson and Garrett Starkey, and sophomore Matthew Eckles.
Starkey's senior campaign was his only year as a Sun Devil after spending three seasons in Palo Alto, but the senior transfer made an instant impact for ASU, scoring at both the MPSF Championships and the Pac-12 Championships in the pole vault.
The redshirt senior also put a bow on his collegiate career in June with his first NCAA Championship appearance where he finished 16th.
Eckles added Pac-12 pole vault champion to his list of accomplishments during the 2017 outdoor season, and advanced to the West Prelims for the second time in his short Sun Devil career.
Albertson's academic honor is just the latest of his standout senior season.
The ASU 5,000-meter record-holder picked up his third-straight MPSF academic all-conference honor during the indoor season, and competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after he took third in the same event at the Pac-12 Championships outdoors.
On the women's side, Kaylee Antill, Keyasia Tibbs, Ashley Weber, Chelsey Albertson, Kristiana Warth and Melanie Johnson received the All-Academic honor.
Chelsey's senior year included a personal best in the 1,500 and all-conference honors at the Pac-12 and MPSF Championships. She won Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Week back in March for her two wins at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in the 1,500, and as a leg of the 4X800-meter relay team.
The freshman standout Antill scored at the MPSF and Pac-12 Championships in the weight throw and hammer throw, respectively. Her hammer throw of over 60 meters at the Duel in the Desert gave her a spot in the West Prelims where she finished 28th.
Tibbs' senior season included a trip to Eugene for the NCAA Outdoor Championships as well as a spot at the U.S. Championships in the triple jump.
The Pac-12 runner-up and MPSF champion in the triple jump also scored in the long jump at the conference championships indoors and outdoors for the Sun Devils.
Weber and Johnson both earned places in the West Prelims in throwing events. The sophomore javelin specialist Johnson finished 45th, while Weber finished 39th in the shot put to wrap up her Sun Devil career. Weber scored at the MPSF Championships in the shot put to give her four-straight years of all-conference honors indoors.
Warth took seventh in the pole vault at the Pac-12 Championships and the junior also advanced to the West Preliminary Rounds with her 4.07m/13-4.25-foot mark from the Pac-12 vs. Big 10 Invitational.
To qualify for the academic honor, the student athlete must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and have either participated in any round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, including prelims; or finished the regular indoor season in the NCAA top 96 in an individual event or in the top 48 as a member of a relay team.
