Starkey Captures First All-American Honor on Day 1Starkey Captures First All-American Honor on Day 1
EUGENE, Ore. – Day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships saw graduate senior Garrett Starkey earn his first-ever All-American honor in the men's pole vault in front of thousands of fans at Tracktown USA on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Starkey finished 16th in his first-ever NCAA Championship appearance to cap off his first season wearing the Maroon & Gold.

The Chandler-native cleared the first bar at 5.15m (16-10.75) on his first attempt before moving to 5.30m (17-4.50). He nearly cleared the bar on his first attempt again, but just clipped the bar on his way down.

He wouldn't clear 5.30m, but his first clearance would be good enough for a second-team All-American honor.

Despite spending only one year at ASU after transferring from Stanford, Starkey will depart holding the second-best mark in ASU history at 5.50m (18-0.50).

Thursday features the Maggie Ewen show, as she competes in the hammer throw at approximately 3:15 p.m. PT and the shot put at 6:40 p.m. PT. She enters the hammer as the national favorite, being the only female to eclipse 70 meters this season and the new American collegiate record holder.

All coverage can be seen on ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN2 and ESPN3 (times & schedule may vary).
