SEATTLE – A four-run seventh inning propelled Sun Devil Baseball past Seattle, 6-4, on Tuesday evening to wrap up a six-day trip to the Pacific Northwest.
Jeremy McCuin was 3-of-4 with two RBIs and had the big base knock to get the seventh inning rally going. Zach Cerbo went 2-of-3 with a home run and two walks while Gage Canning and Carter Aldrete also added multi-hit games.
The Sun Devil pitching staff allowed just one earned run on the day as starting left-hander Chaz Montoya went 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and just one earned run against. Connor Higgins earned the four-out save – his team-leading fourth of the year – while Grant Schneider earned his first victory of the year.
After Seattle struck first in the bottom of the first behind a trio of singles, Cerbo went yard in the top of the second inning to even things at 1-1.
The Redhawks would add three unanswered – and unearned – runs through the sixth inning to jump ahead to a 4-1 lead due to some Sun Devil defensive lapses.
That set up the big seventh inning, where the Sun Devils batted around the order en route to four runs. McCuin had the big hit of the frame – his third of the day – with a bases loaded, two-RBI single to open the scoring in the frame.
Myles Denson would score on a wild pitch to tie the game for the second time at 4-4.
With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, power-hitting lefty Hunter Bishop stepped to the plate and took advantage of a Redhawk defense that was playing back as he laid down a perfect bunt down the left field line that stayed fair and scored Gage Canning to give ASU its first lead of the of the game at 5-4.
Seattle threatened in the eighth, putting runners on the corners and prompting a call to the pen in favor of Higgins. The sophomore induced an inning-ending ground out to escape the jam.
The Sun Devils added some insurance in the ninth, capitalizing on a pair of infield errors with a run to increase their lead to 6-4. The run wouldn't matter however, as Higgins retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth four his fourth save of the season.
