TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Athletics had a combined seven student-athletes named to CoSIDA's Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Teams, as released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
Richard Bohus (men's swimming), Anthony Croston (hockey), and Jared du Toit (men's golf) earned First Team accolades on the men's side while on the women's side, Corinne Belkoff (gymnastics) was named to the First Team and Bianca Arellano (beach volleyball), Maud Koopman (water polo), and Monica Vaughn (women's golf) were named to the Second Team.
ASU led the Pac-12 in honorees on both the men's and women's side. USC (2) and Cal (1) were the only other Pac-12 schools to win men's honors, while ASU earned three spots. For the women, ASU led with all four nominees being named, between the First and Second teams, followed by Stanford (3), USC, Washington State, Oregon State, Oregon (2), Utah, Arizona, and UCLA (1).
Bohus was part of the Pac-12 championship 400 free relay team, earning All-American status in the same event as well as Honorable Mention All-America status in five other events. The Pac-12 First Team All-Academic honoree was a key member of the nation's Most Improved Team, helping the team move up 30 spots at NCAA's, and owns nine of 10 spots in ASU's all-time 100 back records. Outside of collegiate competition, he represented Hungary at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 100 free and 4x100 medley relay.
Croston led the hockey team in goals scored (10) and tied for the lead in points (21) in 2016-17, going from a total of seven points as a rookie to the team-leading scorer this year. He recorded the program's first-ever hat trick this season, was named an assistant captain as a sophomore, and won the Team MVP award. He is also a two-time Sun Devil Scholar Baller, volunteers at food banks, and visits Phoenix Children's Hospital and local elementary schools.
Ranked 10th in the nation in stroke average going into next week's Regionals, du Toit is also tied for the nation's lead with nine eagles. He recently earned First-Team All-Conference honors and, earlier this season, took home individual honors at The Prestige at PGA West on Feb. 22, shooting a 9-under 204. He has posted seven top-10 finishes this season and will lead the team in next week's Austin NCAA Regionals (May 15-17).
Belkoff recently signed off on a solid 2017 campaign. A steady contributor on vault and floor, Belkoff appeared in each of the Gym Devils' 11 outings on the season. Excelling in and out of the gym, she is currently enrolled in Barrett Honor's College, pursuing a degree in business management. She boasts the highest GPA in Pac-12 gymnastics with a 4.06 and was recently named to the Pac-12 All-Academic First Team.
Posting a 23-11 record in 2017, Arellano and fellow senior Whitney Follette's 23 wins helped propel the Sand Devils to a record-best 16 victories. Her efforts earned a second-consecutive appearance on the All-Pac-12 First Team and she finished her collegiate career as one of the most decorated players in program history. She closed her four-year tenure as the second-winningest player in program history with 59 victories, while also capping her career as part of the winningest pair in program history (41 wins).
Koopman ranked third for ASU water polo in 2017, posting 12 multi-goal games and two games with five goals. She has scored 86 goals in just two seasons, on pace to rank in the top-five in program records for career goals. She also has led ASU to a 38-13 record the past two years, giving ASU one of their highest win percentages in back-to-back seasons under Head Coach Todd Clapper.
Vaughn recently won her second collegiate tournament with individual medalist honors at 2017 NCAA Regionals in Lubbock, helping lead her team to their first Regionals victory since 2009. In the top-20 in Women's World Amateur Golf Rankings, she set a new program low round vs. par (64/-8) at the PING/ASU Invitational (Apr. 7). The two-time All-American and three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree was a member of USA's 2016 Curtis Cup team and has four straight top-three finishes going into NCAA's.
Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts (regions) across the U.S. and Canada as Arizona State is part of District Eight alongside schools from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Canada).
The Academic All-America® program started in 1952 and currently recognizes scholar-athletes from football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's track and field as well as numerous other sports under the "at-large" umbrella.
At-large eligible sports include women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's rowing, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's wrestling.
Each school can nominate four men and four women, with seven of eight nominees for ASU chosen for either the First or Second team in 2017.
