BERKELEY, Calif -- Sophomore Gage Canning knocked his first home run of the season, but Sun Devil Baseball couldn't overcome an early deficit as they fell, 10-2, to California on Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond.
Shining in the loss was righty James Ryan, who threw two innings of hitless ball against hot-hitting California. The sophomore retired all six batters he faced in his two innings of work. Canning also had another multi-hit performance, his third in the last four games, this time notching a home run and single with a RBI on the afternoon.
California (15-14, 7-6) put runs on the board in both the first and second innings to bring the Devils into a 3-0 hole early on.
Starting right-hander Jake Godfrey (2-3) would exit after 1 2/3 innings of work, eventually earning the loss while giving up three runs off six hits. He gave way to lefty Connor Higgins, who stepped in with two in scoring position, but used just two pitches to induce a line out to limit the damage. The Pennsylvania-native experienced smooth sailing in his first two innings of work, setting the side down in order in the third and working around a two-out walk to throw up a zero in the fourth. The Bears would eventually break through in the fifth and sixth innings, tagging Higgins for five runs and chasing him from the game.
Canning stepped up to the plate in the fifth and rocked the first pitch he saw over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season, bringing the deficit to just two runs at 3-1.
The Devils (12-18, 2-10) found themselves in a 10-1 hole by the eighth inning, but junior Andrew Snow would work a walk and Andrew Shaps would nail a double to bring the score to the final 10-2.
NOTES: Lyle Lin has reached base in 16 consecutive games and all but one single game this season…The last time James Ryan held opponents hitless in an outing of 2.0 IP+ was February 18, 2017 against Northwestern...He had not achieved that feat at all last season...
