BERKELEY – A huge day from Andrew Shaps and the extension of Lyle Lin's hitting streak weren't enough to rally Sun Devil Baseball past California in a 6-4 loss on Saturday in Berkeley.
Shaps went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs on the afternoon and Lin extended his season's team-best hitting streak to 12 games but ASU again fell into an early hole in the contest and was unable to complete the valiant comeback bid.
Andrew Snow went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles on the afternoon while Tyler Williams added his fourth home run of the season. Alec Marsh pitched a season-high 3.0 innings with no runs allowed and a pair of strikeouts.
Chaz Montoya (2-2) took the loss, striking out five in 5.0 innings of work but also allowing five walks. Montoya largely limited the Cal damage despite the walks, but a four-run third inning would prove enough to give the Bears the cushion they would need to withstand the ASU rally.
The Devils fell into a 6-0 hole through the first five innings of the effort before the Bats came alive in the sixth. Williams and Shaps led off the inning with back-to-back solo shots. Andrew Snow reached on his second double of the game and Gage Canning sent him home with a double of his own to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Williams and Shaps struck again in the seventh as Williams walked and Shaps brought him home from first with a double to get the Devils back within two runs.
Marsh came in to spell Montoya in the sixth and posted three scoreless innings of work to give ASU a chance. A leadoff double by Snow in the eighth was unable to be capitalized upon, however, and the Devils went down in order in the ninth to end any comeback attempts.
NOTES: Lin's 12-game hitting streak is tied for fifth among all Sun Devil freshmen since 2000…With a hit in tomorrow's contest, he would join Andrew Snow and Gage Canning in a tied for third among ASU freshmen since 2000 with 13…Should he accomplish the feat, it would mark the third consecutive season a Sun Devil freshman has had a 13+ game hitting streak…Lin has reached base in 15 consecutive games and all but one single game this season…Andrew Shaps has hit for a two-game cycle in the series as he had a triple in Friday's game and a single, double and home run on Saturday…Saturday was also Shap's seventh 3+ hit game this season, tied with Gage Canning for second on the team…Alec Marsh went a career-best 3.0 innings, topping his previous best of 2.2 against UNLV earlier this year…The Sun Devils hit back-to-back home runs for the first time since Colby Woodmansee and Joey Bielek did it against USC on May 22, 2015…
