AZUSA/TORRANCE, Calif. – Senior Chelsey Albertson highlighted day two of competition for the Sun Devil track and field team in the Los Angeles area on Friday evening.
The distance runner clocked the second-fastest 1,500-meter time in ASU history with a 4:16.02 for the third-best time among college athetes in the event of over 274 women – which also included professionals at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Albertson's time ranks ninth compared to other times across the country entering the weekend.
Only 2016 Rio Olympian and former NCAA champion Shelby Houlihan owns a faster time as a Sun Devil.
Four heats later, freshman Alexis Nichols ran a whopping, five-second personal best in the 1,500-meter event. She clocked a 4:26.41, which earned her 45th place out of the field of nearly 300 competitors.
Earlier in the afternoon at the Bryan Clay Invite, redshirt seniors Blake and Kyle Elliott competed in the 800-meter event. Blake earned a new seasonal best with a time of 1:52.99, while Kyle registered a 1:57.17.
Between Albertson's 1,500 and the 800-meter, redshirt sophomore Brandon Boys and redshirt freshman Kyle Shinn also competed in the 1,500-meter event. Boys just missed running his second sub-four minute time at 4:00.96, while Shinn hit 4:03.31.
At the Mt. SAC Relay nearly 40 miles away, redshirt freshman Sam Ortega, redshirt junior Jenna Maack, senior Adriana Olivas and sophomore John Reniewicki were competing in the longer events.
In the 5k invite event, Olivas ran a 17:21.32 – a seasonal best.
Ortega and Maack both ran in the 5,000-meter while Reniewicki went the distance in the 10,000-meter event. Maack placed 39th of the 58 competitors with a time of 17:10.25, while Ortega ran 18:10.03.
Reniewicki, who is slowly returning to full form, ran 15:21.25.
The Devils rejoin their teammates, as a majority of the team competes in the Jim Bush Invitational – a team scored event at UCLA that includes Alabama, Texas A&M, UTEP and the Bruins.
Field events begin at 8:30 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. Track events begin at 2:15 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay.
