PHOENIX – Eder Erives punched out a season's best seven batters to earn his third save of the season as Sun Devil Baseball held on for a 5-3 victory against UNLV on Tuesday night in Phoenix.
Erives matched his career high for strikeouts in a relief appearance with the seven strikeouts, not allowing a hit in 3.2 scoreless innings of work to back up a solid start from lefty Eli Lingos. The seven strikeouts were the second most by a Sun Devil this season, behind only Lingos' eight strikeouts against No. 1 TCU in February.
Lingos earned the win after going 5.1 innings with just two earned runs allowed with four strikeouts to just one walk to improve to 4-3 on the season.
On the offensive end, Tyler Williams knocked his team-best fifth big fly of the season while Lyle Lin was 1-for-3 with two RBIs to help lead the charge. Jeremy McCuin went 3-of-4 from the nine hole on the evening.
The Sun Devils wasted no time getting on the board, manufacturing a run behind Gage Canning leadoff single, stolen base and advancement to third on an Andrew Shaps ground out. Lin added to his team-leading RBI total with a sacrifice fly to give ASU a 1-0 lead after one.
Williams followed that up with his team-leading fifth home run of the season to leadoff the second inning and a 2-0 Sun Devil advantage. The Devils weren't done in the frame, tagging two more with a McCuin RBI single and a Canning sacrifice fly to go up 4-0.
Lin notched his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth, plating Shaps from second with a two-out double after Shaps stole ASU's third base of the game. The Devils would finish the game with a season-best five stolen bases in the effort.
The Rebels cut into ASU's 5-0 lead in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring three runs to make a it a 5-3 game and prompt the entry of Erives into the contest. Erives responded with his team-leading third save of the season in 3.2 innings of hitless relief.
