PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Sun Devil baseball team dropped the series finale of its Pac-12 opening series against No. 2 Oregon State, falling 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Right-hander Eder Erives got the start for the Sun Devils (9-10), his first of the season and fourth start of his career. Erives managed to hold the dangerous Beavers lineup in check, giving the Sun Devil pitching staff relief by providing solid innings. The senior went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three. The Beavers were held scoreless in the first inning for the first time in the series.
The Sun Devils threatened to strike first in the bottom half of the second inning of Oregon State (17-1) starting right-hander Jake Thompson. Designated hitter Hunter Bishop singled up the middle and advanced to second when outfielder Ryan Lillard walked. Thompson recorded a strikeout to escape the early jam.
The Beavers took the lead in the top half of the third thanks to an RBI-groundout from designated hitter Tyler Malone that scored catcher K.J. Harrison who had reached on a one-out double. With a runner still on third, Erives forced a flyout to end the inning and prevent further damage.
Oregon State tacked on a second run in the fourth inning. A two-out single and stolen base from second baseman Nick Madrigal placed a runner in scoring position. Madrigal would be delivered home as the next batter, outfielder Christian Donahue, singled to center to make it 2-0 Oregon State.
Erives would work into the fifth inning, recording two outs before giving way to left-hander Reagan Todd with two runners on base. On the first pitch of his outing, Reagan Todd prohibited the Beavers from adding to their lead, retiring the batter attempting to bunt for a hit. Todd pitched a scoreless sixth inning as the Beavers maintained a 2-0 lead.
Arizona State would attempt to create some momentum and push across their first run once again in the sixth. Outfielder Gage Canning lined a one-out single to left and the following batter Andrew Snow reached base on an error, putting two runners on base. Jake Thompson was once again able to maneuver around the scoring opportunity, inducing a double play to end the inning.
Reagan Todd came out to the mound to start the seventh inning, but was replaced later in the inning by right-hander Grant Schneider. The final line for Todd ended at 1.2 innings, two hits and one run allowed. Schneider faced two batters, recording a fly out and allowed a single, before being replaced by left-hander Chaz Montoya.
Montoya gave up a pair of RBI-singles that extended the Oregon State lead to 4-0 but would cruise the rest of his outing, going the final 2.1 innings for the Sun Devils. Montoya did not allow a run of his own while striking out three to keep the Sun Devils in the game.
Arizona State made another attempt to score in the eighth inning. Catcher Zach Cerbo earned a one-out walk that chased Oregon State starter Jake Thompson from the game. Thompson finished the afternoon with 7.1 innings pitched allowing two hits and no runs while striking out 10. Left-hander Jake Mulholland would replace Thompson, working around the inherited baserunner by retiring the next two batters.
Mulholland would take the mound in the ninth, with his team still leading 4-0. Mulholland quickly retired the first two hitters of the inning, leaving the Devils down to their final out. First baseman Lyle Lin tried to spark one final rally to score a run, driving a triple to off the right field wall. Mulholland retired the next batter to preserve the shutout and hand Oregon State the 4-0 victory.
Notes:
Lyle Lin has now reached base at least once in 18 of his first 19 games as a Sun Devil…Lin's ninth-inning triple was the first of his career… With his 2.1 shutout inning outing today, left-hander Chaz Montoya has not allowed a run in 6.0 consecutive innings of work...Montoya has allowed just one run over 8.1 innings in his six appearances since February 26th…Eder Erives' 4.2 innings pitched are the most he has thrown since throwing 6.1 innings of relief against New Mexico on May 1st of last season
Up Next: The Sun Devils continue will head to Los Angeles for their Pac-12 Road opener against USC next weekend. The Devils open the series on Friday, March 24 at 6 p.m. PT followed by Saturday's tilt at 7 p.m. The finale will get underway at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The final two games of the series will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks while each game will be aired live back in Arizona on 1060 AM, 100.7 HD 2 and the TuneIn app at thesundevils.com on Friday and Sunday. Saturday's game channel remains TBD dependent on the Sun Devil women's basketball advancement in the NCAA Tournament.
