SEATTLE – The No. 23 Arizona State women's basketball team was unable to complete a sweep on its trip to the state of Washington as the Sun Devils fell to No. 10 Washington 70-57 on Sunday.
A tough second quarter in which the Sun Devils were outscored 21-11 by the Huskies proved to be the difference as the two teams played on fairly even terms – Washington outscored ASU 49-46 – for the other three quarters.
Sophie Brunner (16 points, six rebounds and four assists) and Reili Richardson (13 points, three assists) led the Sun Devils (16-9, 7-7 Pac-12), who are now tied with Oregon (17-9, 7-7) for fifth place in the Pac-12 standings.
Quinn Dornstauder (eight points, one rebound), who had a double-double in ASU's win at Washington State on Friday night, played only 14 minutes due to foul trouble. Kianna Ibis, who grabbed a career-high eight rebounds at WSU, followed up by pulling down seven more rebounds to go with four points.
The Huskies (24-3, 12-2), who remained tied for first place in the Pac-12 with eighth-ranked Stanford (22-4, 12-2) and ninth-ranked Oregon State (22-3, 12-2), were led by Kelsey Plum (29 points) and Chantel Osahor (18 points, 18 rebounds), who combined for 47 of Washington's 70 points.
The Sun Devils held the Huskies 16.3 points below their scoring average, limited them to only three 3-pointers (came in averaging nearly 11 makes per game from long range) and did not allow Plum to connect from beyond the arc (0 for 7) as the Pac-12's all-time scoring leader had done at least once in each of her last 46 games. What Washington was not able to do on the perimeter it made up for in the paint where it outscored ASU 46-16. The Huskies also took advantage of ASU's miscues as they scored 27 points off of 16 turnovers.
Dornstauder came out and scored four of ASU's first six points, but would have to take a seat on the bench after picking up her second foul with 4:04 left in the first quarter. She played less than a minute in the second quarter after being whistled for her third foul with 6:21 remaining in the half.
Trailing by 10 at the time Dornstauder left in the second quarter, the Sun Devils briefly rallied as a 3-pointer by Sydney Goodson and three free throws by Richardson cut the Huskies' lead to 23-19. The Huskies would respond with 12 straight points over the ensuing five minutes to take a commanding 35-19 lead. A 3-pointer by Brunner with 12 seconds left in the half broke ASU's scoring drought and the Sun Devils went to the locker room down 35-22.
Down by 15 in the third quarter, the Sun Devils were able to string together a run of six straight points coming courtesy of jumpers by Goodson, Brunner and Kiara Russell. Now down by nine, the Sun Devils appeared they would have a chance to reduce the Husky lead even more after forcing a turnover. Unfortunately they never got a chance, as the Huskies would steal it right back and score to once again take a double-digit advantage, 44-33 midway through the third quarter.
Washington would eventually lead by as many as 18 as the Sun Devils got no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.
The Sun Devils return to action on Friday (7 p.m) when they travel to Tucson for the first of consecutive Territorial Cup Series contests against Arizona.
