TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State Softball jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, claiming it's sixth victory with an 8-0 win over UT Arlington Saturday afternoon at Farrington Stadium.
"We haven't put a team away and it was nice to see them do that today," head coach Trishia Ford said. "We're getting on a good roll, but It's just one game at a time for us right now."
The Sun Devils turned to Breanna Macha, who made her second start of the season. The junior delivered, again, striking out four en rout to a complete-game shutout, the third of the weekend for the Devils.
"If you look at UT Arlington, they did really well in their conference last year and they have a kid on the USA watchlist," Ford added. "Dale Ryndak and Breanna Macha are going to battle and they're going to keep us in a lot of games."
The Sun Devil offense also shined in the second half of Saturday's doubleheader, as the team combined for eight runs on a season-high 10 hits. Four Devils notched multi-hit performances against the Mavericks, including Chelsea Gonzales who went 2-for-2 with six RBI on the day.
"It's a big statistic to see what the end result is when you score first," Macha said. "It's great to have your team play and hit behind you. It makes a big statement."
Arizona State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, plating a run on a sacrifice fly before scratching in two more on a double by Ulufa (Fa) Leilua that gave the Sun Devils a 3-0 lead entering the second.
After holding the Mavericks off the board in the top of the second, ASU plated two more runs on three hits to extend their lead to 5-0.
The Devils would remain scoreless until the sixth inning where they would cross the plate three times by way of a single, ground out and a double, extending the closing out the 8-0 win.
Sun Devil softball returns to action for their final game of the Kajikawa Class Sunday morning against UC Riverside. First pitch is set for 11:45 a.m. Fans can follow all of the action of the 2017 softball season by following @ASUSoftball on Twitter.
