AMES, Iowa – The Arizona State women's gymnastics team opened the 2017 campaign on the road at Iowa State Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Gym Devils fell short of the Cyclones posting a 191.800 to their 193.850.

"This certainly wasn't the start to the season we were looking for today; too many of them let their nerves get the best of them," said Arizona State head gymnastics coach Jay Santos. "We simply made far too many mistakes today and a lot of those mistakes were uncharacteristic.  We need to get back in the gym and really start attacking our weaknesses for the coming weeks."

ASU started the night on bars, scoring a team total 48.225, the highest event score on the evening. Freshman Ashley Szafranski made her collegiate debut and led the Gym Devils with a 9.725. Junior Nichelle Christopherson followed with a 9.675.

Sophomore Morgan Wilson tied a career high 9.700 on vault to lead the Gym Devils on the event. Freshman Jessica Ginn debuted with a 9.650, while sophomore Katelyn Lentz recorded a 9.600.

Three Sun Devils posted a 9.7+ on beam, led by Szafranski's second team-high of the night, a 9.750. Sophomore Justine Callis posted a 9.725 followed by Christopherson's 9.700.
