TEMPE – An offense and defense that clicked on all cylinders paved the way for the No. 24 Arizona State women's basketball team's dominating 71-42 victory over Boston University on the first day of the ASU Classic.
Three players – Sabrina Haines (12 points), Quinn Dornstauder (11 points) and Sophie Brunner (10 points) – posted double-digit point totals for the Sun Devils (4-2), who will face No. 19 Florida in Sunday's ASU Classic championship game.
The trio of Haines (3-5 FGs), Dornstauder (5-5) and Brunner (4-5) combined to shoot 80 percent (12-15) vs. Boston (1-6). Haines led ASU with five assists while Brunner added a team-high three steals. Coming one basket shot of double figures in scoring were Robbi Ryan (eight points/4-8 FGs) and Kianna Ibis (eight points/4-4 FGs).
Working in sync with the offense was the Sun Devil defense that forced 22 turnovers, which led to 30 points on the opposite end.
The Sun Devils, who never trailed on Saturday, shot a season-high 58 percent and had a 32-19 advantage on the boards.
After allowing Boston to shoot 60 percent in the first quarter, the Sun Devils clamped down on the defensive end as the Terriers would make only 25 percent of their shots over the ensuing two quarters. During those same 20 minutes the Sun Devils shot 54 percent to extend out to a 36-19 lead at the half and a 51-30 lead after three quarters.
Haines, who scored her first points of the game on a four-point play in the closing seconds of the first half, helped ASU close out the win with a team-high six points in the fourth quarter.
A pair of free throws by Sydney Goodson gave ASU its largest lead of the afternoon, 70-36 with just under two minutes remaining.
Florida (6-1) defeated Long Beach State 83-53 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
