TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State volleyball team (9-20, 2-15 Pac-12) fell to the No. 12 Stanford Cardinal (18-7, 12-5 Pac-12) in three sets, 21-25, 17-25, 18-25, Friday night in Wells Fargo Arena.
"I'm a huge fan of how we played," said head coach Stevie Mussie. "I like that you force people to make errors, we just have to find a way to eliminate their runs as we go. I thought Carmen (Unzue) did a fabulous job tonight. I thought Maya (McClendon) stayed consistent and hopefully we can get two consecutive nights out of her."
Senior outside hitter Maya McClendon and freshman outside hitter Ivana Jeremic led the Sun Devils with nine kills each. Sophomore middle blocker Carmen Unzue added four kills on .429 attacking.
"Carmen will tell you that Carmen is the best middle blocker in the country and that honestly is a big huge piece of it," Mussie said. "She is a confident kid and she works her butt off and it's something to be admired. Carmen comes in everyday and gives everything she has."
Sophomore setter Kylie Pickrell recorded 25 assists on the match. Jeremic also recorded 10 digs, tying a career high.
For Stanford, freshman Kathryn Plummer led all scorers with 13 kills on .360 attacking. Redshirt senior Inky Ajanaku, freshman Audriana Fitzmorris, and redshirt junior Ivana Vanjak all recorded eight kills on .538, .467, and .316 attacking.
Up next, the Sun Devils stay at home and face the California Golden Bears Saturday evening at 7 p.m. MT in Wells Fargo Arena. The match will broadcast via livestream on TheSunDevils.com with Jacob Franklin and John Engelbert on the call.
