Sun Devil Baseball has released its 12-member 2017 signing class, as announced by head coach Tracy Smith.
"I think our staff has done an fantastic job in addressing the needs of our program," Coach Smith said. "People ask us all the time what we look for and I always tell them, 'We look for arms and athletes.' I think Ben (Greenspan) and Higgy (Brandon Higelin) did an exceptional job of going out and finding the best in the country and we welcome them to Arizona State."
The 2017 Sun Devil signing class is currently rated the No. 11 class in the nation by Perfect Game, featuring two Top-100 recruits and eight ranked in the top-300 nationally. It marks the third consecutive season that Smith has brought in a class rated in the Top-15 nationally by the outlet.
"Not only did we go out and get a group full of exceptional talent, we are bringing in young men that have excelled in the classroom and also have wonderful support networks at home," Smith said. "Many have played at multiple positions for the benefit of their teams and they are proven winners. This signing class truly represents everything we say when we tell people we want to win the Sun Devil Way."
The Sun Devils kept things close to home with the signing class, penning six players out of the state of Arizona – all of whom were ranked about the top 15 players in the state. The Devils also signed three of the Top 50 players out of the California, two of the top seven players in Illinois and the #4 player out of Colorado. Nine of those players played in the prestigious Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif.
"This class is filled with athletic players that have versatility to play all over the diamond," Greenspan said. "We were able to attract pitchers that we feel can come and compete for weekend spots as freshmen and sophomores. The corner bats in this class have the potential to develop into middle-of-the-order threats and the middle infielders have a chance to be a special group."
