SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Arizona State cross country teams wrapped up their 2016 season on Friday afternoon at the NCAA West Regionals at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, with the women placing 8th out of 35 teams and the men taking 13th out of 29.
Redshirt junior Chelsey Albertson was the highlight of the day, earning All-Region honors after placing 19th overall out of 238 runners with a time of 20:04.7. This was Chelsey's best finish of her college career at the Regional meet, as she placed 48th a season ago. On the men's side, her husband CJ ran with the front of the pack for a majority of the race, sitting as high as 8th. He would finish the race in 29th out of 193 men, which was his best finish as well at the meet after placing 77th in 2015.
"It was really a great day today for the Devils," said head coach Louie Quintana. "Despite our inexperience, we competed really well. The men's region is deep -- don't be fooled by our 13th place performance. We are very close to coming together and the future is promising. The women today were just absolutely impressive. They entered the meet ranked 14th, but put it together in the day. It just goes to show the depth of this region.
"We know we have to get better to put us in conversation to make nationals. But the progress is happening and it's exciting."
The women's squad potentially missed making the NCAA meet by just a few spots, as the team they finished behind -- Boise State -- was the first team out according to the FloTrack Kolas Calculator. This all with five of the seven women runners participating in their first-ever NCAA West Regional -- three of them being true freshman.
Based on the results, Chelsey only missed qualifying for the national meet by approximately three spots.
"Chelsey was great today," said Quintana. "All Region in the west is tremendous. We are so very proud of her."
On the men's side, CJ showed he can run with some of the best in the country as he held his own at the front of the pack for a majority of the race. A group of nearly 30 runners were all within a second of each other for a majority of the race, and by the end, CJ found himself in 29th at 30:12.6.
"CJ has had a great career," said Quintana. "My heart goes out to him. He so wanted to make the NCAA meet. He laid it all out there and at the end of the day, that's all you can ask for."
Following CJ was also a group of inexperienced, young runners, as only one other Sun Devil -- redshirt senior Cody Brazeal -- had participated in a regional meet. Redshirt sophomore John Reniewicki followed in second for ASU, finishing in 64th overall.
The Devils will now use the next two months to prepare for the indoor track and field season beginning in January.
