From one coast to the other one, @SunDevilHoops head coach Bobby Hurley has signed a pair of top-100 players for the second straight year in his fall signing class, as 6-6 swingman Kimani Lawrence (New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H.) and 6-2 lead guard Remy Martin of Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon, will join the Sun Devil program in 2017-18.
A four-star signee according to Scout, Martin averaged 14.5 points a game as a junior last season. Lawrence, a four-star small forward from The New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H., is the nation's 54th overall prospect according to ESPN, while Scout.com lists him as the nation's No. 11 small forward.
"We have high hopes for both of them and they are impact players," says Hurley. "Remy was a great get for us in the summer to get it started. He has a lot of characteristics we look for in a lead guard. He is a dynamite defender with great speed and he's got a great motor. He can really push the ball in transition. (We are) trying to recruit players to that style of play and he fits perfectly. He is a great kid academically, comes from a strong family, and is familiar with a winning program as Canyon is one of the top high school programs. He is all about winning, and that is a key in the point guard spot."
"Kimani has played against some great competition. He has been in the AAU circuit, and has carried a big time reputation. He can effectively get to the basket and he can do a lot of things well. He is not just a shooter or a passer, he does a little bit of everything and brings great size with him for a wing player."
Last year marked the first time in the Scout.com recruiting era (2002-present) the Sun Devils signed three four-star players, and next year Coach Hurley is expected to have at least five top-100 players on the roster. ASU had signed eight top-100 players in the previous 15 years, but signed two in the Scout top-100 in Sam Cunliffe (45) and Romello White (81), with Lawrence (54) and Martin (98) now in the fold.
