TEMPE, Ariz. – The enormity of the occasion is not lost on the inaugural Sun Devil women's varsity triathlon team as they prepare for a momentous and historic trip this weekend.
On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Sun Devils will vie for the 2016 Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championship in New Orleans, La., the culmination of an exciting first season for the young program.
ASU has qualified three times over, finishing in the top two in all three competitions this year and finishing first as a team in two of the three. Most recently in Berkeley, the Sun Devils not only won but swept the podium.
The team's outlook is bright leading up to Saturday when all their preparation will be put to the test in a field of a maximum 75 of the nation's best collegiate triathletes. Overall team and individual awards will be awarded to the top three, respectively.
Distances of the draft-legal format triathlon, starting at 1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. AZ time, will be similar to what the team has raced all season – 750-meter swim followed by a 20-kilometer bike, and ending with a 5-kilometer run in and near the New Orleans Lakefront (corner of Lakeshore Dr. and Beauregard Blvd.).
Katie Gorczyca, Charlotte Ahrens, Delaney Bucker, Sarah Quintero, and Amy Darlington will complete the Sun Devil competing quintet in New Orleans.
Fans and supporters can follow both @SunDevilTri and @USATlive on Saturday for updates throughout the day and are encouraged to use the hashtag #NCAAtri leading up to and throughout the event.
Note: As NCAA collegiate triathlon is still an emerging sport, the event is to be referred to as the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championship as it is not yet an NCAA-sponsored national championship.
