EUGENE, Ore. – In a stretch of just over three minutes the Arizona State women's soccer team saw its hopes for victory dashed in a 4-0 loss at Oregon on Sunday.
The Ducks (8-8-1, 2-6 Pac-12) scored three goals in a span of 3:07 in the opening stages of the second half to turn a slim 1-0 lead into a decisive four-goal advantage.
The Sun Devils (6-8-2, 1-6-1 Pac-12) were shutout for the third straight game as they continued to struggle on the offensive end where they once again played with out Jazmarie Mader (No. 3 in the Pac-12 in goals per game), Aly Moon (team's active career leader in goals and points) and Lucy Lara (team's active career leader in assists).
The statistics belied the final outcome as each team accounted for 12 shots while the Sun Devils had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
For the second straight game Jessica Raybe led ASU with three shots. Also recording shots for the Sun Devils were Christina Edwards, Kylie Miniefield, Devyn Kelsey, Hailey Zerbel, Mckenzie Grossman, Taylor Coon, Madison Kmetko, Olivia Hernandez and Melinda Gutierrez. Miniefield, Kelsey, Kmetko and Hernandez accounted for ASU's four shots on goal.
Emma Malsy started at goalkeeper on Sunday and made two saves.
The Ducks scored their first goal 4:30 into the game and would control the action for most of the first 10 minutes.
The Sun Devils started to settle into the game as the half progressed and would put together some moments in which they were threatening in the attacking third. Larisa Staub nearly tied the game in the 14th minute, but her would-be goal was called off due to an offsides violation.
The two teams would play on fairly even terms for the remainder of the half.
A goal by Bayley Bruner in the 47th minute got the snowball rolling for the Ducks, who would add goals at the start of the 49th minute (ball deflected into the net) and the 50th minute (penalty kick). Just like that the Sun Devils were in a 4-0 hole.
Despite the deficit they faced, the Sun Devils continued to push forward in an attempt to find the back of the net. ASU's persistence on the offensive end resulted in five corner kicks in the second half. Unfortunately they were not able to convert any of those opportunities into goals.
ASU's best scoring opportunity of the game came on a free kick from Kelsey in the 70th minute that Oregon goalkeeper Lauren Holden was able to get a hand on to knock it over the crossbar.
The Sun Devils return to action on Thursday when they host No. 10 Cal on Thursday at 7 p.m. They will then close out the weekend on Sunday (3 p.m. PT) when they host No. 3 Stanford. Sunday's game vs. Stanford will be recognized as the team's Senior Day. Senior student-athletes Mckenzie Grossman, Lucy Lara, Ashley March, Larisa Staub and Annie Warren will be honored before the game.
