TEMPE Ariz. - Arizona State Softball defeated Phoenix College in its fall opener Wednesday night at Farrington Stadium.

"You could feel the energy," head coach Trisha Ford said. "They put up a couple runs and we responded and that's what you want to see as a coach. We wanted to find out who would shine when the lights came on, and who gets a little nervous. We had some nerves today, but that is good. That is refreshing because it helps you realize that they really care. It was good to see them come out here and compete."

ASU's high-powered offense exploded at the plate for five home runs. Chelsea Gonzales and Ulufa (Fa) Leilua led the offense, blasting two home runs each, while Sashel Palacios and Breanna Macha added one each.

"It felt good to put all the changes I made to my batting stance to the test tonight," shortstop Chelsea Gonzalez said. "The pitching staff also did amazing and it's so cool to see them so happy. It was a little scary for us at first, but our coaches have taught us so well in these last couple of weeks. We were excited to show them and our crowd what we can do."

Arizona State will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Fullerton, Calif., to face off against Cal State Fullerton and San Diego, before returning back t home on Wednesday, Oct., 26 to face Scottsdale Community College at 6 p.m.
