TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- At the adidas Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, the Sun Devil cross country team finished 31st on the women's side with the men placing 33rd in a field with 40 of the country's top programs.
Despite strong starts by senior CJ Albertson and redshirt junior Chelsey Albertson, the two Devils' could not keep pace in one of the most competitive and largest races in the country, with the two finishing 84rd and 78th, respectively.
"It was a rough day for both groups," said head coach Louie Quintana. "It definitely was not how I drew it up. Our depth isn't a strong suit right now with people running through some sickness and injury. We didn't have ideal positivity and energy leading into the race. We have to turn things around in a short order."
CJ came out of the gates hot, pacing the 260-field men's race for nearly the first quarter of the race. Oregon's Edward Cheserek would eventually run away with the win by a hefty margin.
"CJ went to the front where he belongs," said Quintana. "He just struggled to hang in there."
The women, who are composed of three freshmen and a first-time NCAA Division I transfer, gained the necessary experience before heading into the less-crowded Pac-12 Championship in just two weeks. True freshman Courtney Lewis held her ground, finishing in the top half of the field with a time of 21:35.5. Junior transfer Billie Jo Dytrt sat at about the middle of the pack in her first large race of her college career, running a 21:48.1.
The Sun Devils return home next week for the annual Arizona State Invitational at Papago Golf Course on Friday, Oct. 21. The program invites all cross country and track & field alumni to attend the event and join us for an alumni dinner event immediately following.
