SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Arizona State cross country team put together another 1-2 punch as a squad, with the Sun Devil women this time earning the top spot thanks to redshirt junior Chelsey Albertson's performance on Saturday, Oct. 1.

"It was a really good day for the ladies," said head coach Louie Quintana. "We just keep getting better and better. It's a nice surprise."

The men, once again led by senior CJ Albertson, came in second behind NCAA Division II Chico State -- ranked No. 4 in the nation. The California-native finished in third with a time of 23:47.9. He ran with the front of the pack a majority of the race, and was within two seconds of second place.

"The men ran really well too," said Quintana. "Chico is the real deal -- a very good team. There's no shame in getting beat by them. They have way more depth on that team than we do. We ran great though, ran fast and I'm very happy. We're making great progress with the men."

Back on the women's side, their team performance was well balanced, with senior Jenna Maack returning with a ninth-place performance in his first race of the season. Fellow senior Kaitlin Kaluzny also earned a top-15 finish in 12th with a time of 21:09.5. Two new faces, freshman Courtney Lewis and junior transfer Billie Jo Dytrt, wrapped up the scoring for the women, placing 14th and 39th respectively. Lewis, who was competing in just her third collegiate event, came up huge with a top-15 finish at 21:10.7.

For the men, redshirt sophomore John Reniewicki followed Albertson again in 13th place to help the squad score as few points as possible. The top five scorers all finished in the top 40 to lead the ASU men to a second place finish.

The Sun Devils will have a handful of athletes compete in the Arizona Twilight meet on Friday, Oct. 7, but will prepare for the NCAA Pre-National meet in Terra Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 15.
