IOWA CITY, Iowa—To cap competition at the Hawkeye Classic, the Arizona State volleyball team (4-2) outlasted Oakland (4-2) in its second five-set victory of the weekend (25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-8), on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
"I am ecstatic for Lexi and how she came out tonight and performed, hitting .375 with 23 kills," head coach Stevie Mussie said. "Overall, I thought this was a good win for the team. We know we have to keep getting better and work on our late-game situations. We're looking forward to getting back in the gym and getting ready for Long Beach State, Pepperdine, and Harvard."
Sophomore outside hitter Lexi MacLean put up 10 kills on her previous career best, finishing the day with 23 on .375 attacking, also a career high. MacLean's previous career high, 13 kills, came on Nov. 8, 2015 against Washington State.
Sophomore setter Caroline Pearson posted her second double-double of the weekend with career highs in assists (46) and digs (13), while freshman defensive specialist Courtney Leffel had a career high four service aces, including three in four serves during the match-deciding set.
MacLean, sophomore Jasmine Koonts, and junior Oluoma Okaro each posted three blocks apiece, marking six and a half of ASU's eight total team blocks.
Jessica Dood and Sammy Condon led the Golden Grizzlies with 11 kills each, while Krysteena Davis added 10 and eight blocks. ASU was able to overcome being out-blocked by Oakland, 14.0 to 8.0.
The Sun Devils continue to put the term 'Road Warriors' to good use, traveling to Long Beach, Calif., for the LBSU Baden Invitational on Sept. 9-10. On Friday, ASU takes on Pepperdine at 1 p.m. PT, and on Saturday, ASU will face off against Harvard at Noon PT and host Long Beach State at 6 p.m. PT.
